The handcuffs chafed her wrists, a steady reminder that the system had already convicted her long before the jury was seated. The gallery was a mosaic of faces she knew too well: reporters with their quick thumbs, the Knight family’s silent remaining soldiers, and a few former employees who had taken the settlement money and run.

None would meet her eye. Marcus was three weeks dead, his blood a stain on the timeline of her fall.

She had held his hand as he faded, and now that memory was the only warmth she allowed herself. The prosecution opened with a narrative so clean it gleamed.

They called her a predator, a con artist since childhood, who had engineered the church explosion to decimate the Knight board and clear her path to power. Doctored photos, a falsified paper trail, and the tearful testimony of an estranged cousin painted Scarlett as a sociopath.

Her own lawyer, a public defender with nicotine-stained fingers, whispered apologies between objections that were drowned by the judge’s gavel. Scarlett observed the jury—a dozen faces, mostly middle-aged, mostly afraid.

She could see the fear in their eyes: fear of being wrong, fear of the press, fear of the invisible hand that had orchestrated this theater. Day three brought the star witness: a forensics analyst who claimed to have found explosive residue in Scarlett’s penthouse.

Under cross-examination, Scarlett stood, her voice measured and surgical. “Did you find residue on any of my shoes?

My coat? The car I never drove?” The analyst stammered.

The jury leaned forward. But the judge sustained the prosecution’s objection before the answer could land.

Scarlett sat down, her spine a steel rod. She had made her point, but the rules of this game were clear.

The verdict arrived on a Thursday, under fluorescent lights that hummed with indifference. The foreperson, a retired schoolteacher with a tremor in his hands, read the word that everyone already knew: “Guilty.” The first count.

Then the second. Then twelve more.

Scarlett’s heartbeat was a metronome she refused to rush. She looked at the ceiling—at the dust motes dancing in the light—and thought of the skyscraper she had stormed to kill Victoria.

That had been a victory, no matter what came after. Sentencing was a blur of legalese and moral condemnation.

The judge spoke of her “profound lack of remorse” and the “unprecedented scale of her deceit.” Then the words: life without parole. The gavel fell like the closing of a door.

Scarlett rose, her body moving on instinct. As the bailiffs flanked her, she turned, and for the first time, her gaze landed on the second row.

A man in a gray suit, unremarkable except for the tiny knight chess piece on his cufflink. He caught her eye and gave a nearly imperceptible nod.

Scarlett’s lips twisted—the ghost of a smile that had haunted corporate boardrooms. She leaned toward the microphone one last time, her cuffed hands steadying her.

“You’ve all been very useful,” she said, her voice soft but carrying to every corner. Then she stepped back and let them lead her through the side door, into the cold fluorescent tunnel that smelled of bleach and ending.

Behind her, the gallery erupted. The man with the cufflink was already moving, his phone pressed to his ear.

Outside the courthouse, a nondescript van idled. Inside, Scarlett’s contingency team was already decrypting the files she had buried months ago—files that would crack the case wide open.

She had planned for this conviction. She had planned for the betrayal, the false evidence, the bought judge.

Her imprisonment was the final con: the one that would make them all careless. And then, when they were laughing over champagne, she would strike.
